What is Business?

Business
Business is an institution organized and operated to provide goods and services to the society under the incentive of private gain. — Wheeler
“Business may be defined as an activity in which different persons exchange something of value, whether goods or services, for mutual gain or profit.” — Peterson and Plowman“Business” is derived from the term ‘Busy-ness’, indicating people are engaged in certain activities. Thus, business is an economic activity which involves production or processing and sale or exchange of goods and services on a regular basis with an aim of earning profit.

Business in your life: the kirana store near your house opens every day, sells you goods and earns a margin — that is business. Selling your old bicycle once is not business (it is not regular). But buying shirts wholesale and selling them every weekend absolutely is.

Characteristics of Business

Six fundamental characteristics define any business activity:

1

An Economic Activity

Aim is to earn money.

2

Deals in Goods or Services

Production, purchase, procurement of goods, or rendering of services — or both.

3

Satisfies Human Needs

Activities aimed at satisfying human needs and wants.

4

Regular Basis

Must be done on a regular basis — a one-time sale is not business.

5

Profit is the Primary Goal

Earning profit is the primary motive.

6

Risk is Inherent

The probability of incurring losses or earning inadequate profits is always present.

Spot the pattern: a friend who bakes and sells 10 cakes every Sunday from home checks all six boxes — money earned, goods produced, needs satisfied, weekly regularity, profit motive, and the risk of unsold cakes. That is a real business, even if it is run from a home kitchen.

Scope of Business

The scope of business spreads across five categories:

Production of goods

Rendering of services

Distribution of goods

Rendering distribution assistance

Rendering financial assistance

Broad Classification

(i) Industry

Production of goods — covered in the next topic.

(ii) Commerce

Trade and its auxiliaries — covered in a later topic.

Think about it: your school canteen is one business supported by five others — the wholesaler who supplies it (distribution), the truck that delivers (transport), the bank that holds its money (banking), the insurer of its stock (insurance) and the hoarding that advertises it (advertising). That is the full scope of business in one lunch break.
