Why Business Plans Fail

Why Plans Fail

Strategies most often fail because they are not executed well. Things that are supposed to happen just don't happen. The failure to execute the plan, not the plan itself, is most often cited as the reason a strategic plan has underperformed. This creates significant frustration and cynicism within an organization.

The Key to Successful Execution

The key to successful execution is alignment. Strategy, people, and work processes need to be effectively linked. The strategic plan must be understood by the entire organization, the right people need to be in the right jobs, and action plans must be developed, implemented, and reviewed.

Think about it:Many students make study timetables but never follow them. The plan isn't the problem — the execution is. Same principle applies to business.

6 Steps to Successful Execution

Mission & Strategy

1/6

Once the broad mission, vision and strategy for the organization have been established, focusing on its core competencies, specific quantifiable goals to support the strategy must be formulated.

Example:A tiffin service's mission: “Provide affordable, home-style meals to college students.” Quantifiable goal: serve 100 students per day within 6 months.

Role of Family and Society

Family's Role in Entrepreneurship

The individual perception of what his/her family and friends think about entrepreneurship has a crucial role to play. Family's support is very essential because in most cases, the youth would need to borrow initial finances from family and friends. The family's attitude towards education and other careers in fields like medicine, engineering etc. are likely to dominate the youth's mindset towards entrepreneurship.

Family Financial Support

Families are more likely to take loan and fund professional education rather than fund a new business venture where risk is involved.

Societal Views on Marriage

Society's views about business entrepreneurs as a prospective bridegroom can promote or inhibit entrepreneurship. In some societies, people prefer to marry daughters to persons holding government jobs, thinking they are more secure.

Professional Preference

Professionals like lawyers, doctors and scientists are seen as the most preferred as bridegrooms. These factors shape entrepreneurship in the society.

Challenges Faced by Women Entrepreneurs

Women Entrepreneurs

Women entrepreneurs face a series of problems right from the beginning till the enterprise functions. Being a woman itself poses various problems to a female entrepreneur. The problem of Indian women pertains to her responsibility towards family, society and huge workload.

Expert Perspective

Hina Shah, pioneer in women entrepreneurship for 30+ years and founder of ICECD: “Currently, the overall environment for women entrepreneurship in India is conducive and a series of initiatives has been taken up to encourage it. However, from a macro policy point of view, women entrepreneurship development has been a residual category.”
