Four Methods of Classification
Data can be classified in four different ways depending on what feature we use as the basis for grouping.
Geographical
Classified by location or region
Data classified according to geographical location or region (countries, states, districts).

Chronological
Classified by time period
Data classified with respect to different periods of time (decades, years, months), arranged in ascending or descending order.

Qualitative
Classified by attributes
Data classified on the basis of descriptive characteristics / attributes (sex, literacy, region, caste, education) that cannot be quantified.
Simple Classification
Two classes based on one attribute only. Example: population divided into Males and Females.
Manifold Classification
More than one attribute, or each class sub-divided into more than two sub-classes. Example: population ? male/female ? literate/illiterate ? married/unmarried.
Used when: Studying attributes, opinions, categorical data.
Quantitative
Classified by measurable values
Data classified on the basis of measurable characteristics (height, weight, income, production). Involves two elements: Variable (characteristic) and Frequency (number of observations).

Simple Classification
Facts classified into two classes according to one attribute only. Always creates exactly 2 groups (dichotomous).
Example:
Population of a city divided into Males and Females.
Manifold Classification
Facts classified according to more than one attribute. Each class is sub-divided into more than two sub-classes, creating a hierarchy of classes.
Example:
Population ? Males/Females ? Literates/Illiterates ? Married/Unmarried
