Meaning and Definition
Notes — the key lines
Leadership is the quality that influences people to work willingly for specified goals. Terry: the quality of influencing others to work willingly for the realisation of specified goals. A leader works through guidance and inspiration, not pressure.
Leadership is required when people work in a group. In industrial units, employees work in groups, and leadership has to be provided to those groups. The leader channels the efforts of the group in a proper direction: he provides guidance, motivates, and inspires faith. Leadership is a source of motivation for others.

Trap — Leadership is not the same as management — authority can compel, leadership must be accepted.
Eight Characteristics of Leadership
Notes — the key lines
Followers must exist; a leader cannot lead alone. Leadership is continuous and must be accepted by subordinates. It blends formal authority with informal influence, and depends on the situation.
A leader always provides leadership to followers. The existence of followers is a must for the implementation of leadership.
As long as the business unit exists, the leader has to provide leadership to the subordinates. Leadership is a continuous process.
There must be a leader as well as subordinates. The leader must be accepted by the subordinates: he directs them, and they follow him.
Formally, the leader is the head of a specific group. Informally, he can influence anyone who comes into contact with him and stimulate them for the achievement of objectives.
The leader must be an ideal person. He influences subordinates by his behaviour and nature; some qualities are in-born, while others are cultivated.
Leadership includes the motivation of employees, so the leader first motivates employees to get the expected result.
Leadership brings harmony of interest between the leader and his subordinates. It becomes inefficient if their interests are at variance.
The success of a leader depends on certain circumstances. If the situation changes, the leader may not get the same success.
Trap — "Effect of situation" does not excuse a leader — it means one style will not work in every situation.
