The creative process is a systematic sequence of five steps that transforms a raw idea into a validated opportunity:

1. **Idea germination** — This is the seeding stage of a new idea, where the entrepreneur recognises that an opportunity exists. It takes place according to the interest and curiosity of the entrepreneur, or the need of a specific problem or area of study. For example, Mansukhbhai Prajapati thought of a non-stick pan made from clay and a clay refrigerator that works without electricity — he conceived the idea in 2001, though the final product took shape only in 2004.

2. **Preparation** — On the basis of the idea, interest and curiosity, the need is adjudged by the entrepreneur and he starts looking for the answer to implement the idea. If the idea is to launch a new product or service, market research is conducted, because the seed of curiosity has taken the form of an idea and the entrepreneur can foresee the future of the product.

3. **Incubation** — This is the subconscious assimilation of information, a transition period in which the entrepreneur thinks about the idea and its implementation in the subconscious mind. For example, studying the pros and cons of manufacturing the product before launching it.

4. **Illumination** — The idea re-surfaces in a realistic way and the entrepreneur comes out with a viable plan to give it practical shape by collecting raw material, arranging funds and policy-making for the implementation of the idea.

5. **Verification** — Also called the validation or testing stage, where the idea is verified to prove that it has value. This is the most difficult phase of creativity as obstacles begin to appear; the developing knowledge is converted into application.

The process is not strictly linear — the entrepreneur may move back and forth between stages, refining the idea as obstacles are encountered.
